RYA Powerboat Skills Assessment

Duration: 1 day, £108

Course information and content

Minimum Standard: RYA Powerboat (Level2) or equivalent standard; 5 years domestic or 1 year commercial experience driving powerboats

This one-day programme is a pre-entry requirement for the RYA Powerboat Instructor and includes the opportunity to brush up on personal powerboat driving skills followed by a skills assessment which will require a high standard of boat driving, seamanship and personal knowledge within the Powerboat Level 2 syllabus.

The course is designed to assess your powerboat handling skills and background knowledge with candidates expected to demonstrate their ability in all aspects of the Level two syllabus as described in the Powerboat Logbook G20.

Kit and Clothing 

Swansea Watersports supplies a range of technical equipment including waterproofs and buoyancy aids. However you are very welcome to bring your own if you wish.

RYA Powerboating Instructor

 Duration: 3 days, £384

Course information and content

This three day course trains you in the various techniques and teaching methods required to instruct the RYA Level 1 and 2 syllabi. You will plan and run a number of classroom and practical sessions under the supervision of an experienced RYA Powerboat Trainer.

Pre-entry Requirements

  • In order to become a powerboat instructor, candidates need to fulfil some pre-entry requirements as follows;
  • Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment,
  • Hold the RYA National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2)
  • Hold recognised First Aid certificate (including hypothermia and resuscitation). Click here for a list of all acceptable First Aid certificates
  • Candidates must be at least 16yrs
  • Completion of pre-course work

All the above requirements are needed BEFORE attending the course. If you attend the course without the required certification, you will not have your Instructor award processed.

*On booking this course, candidates will be sent a separate email, which will contain full details of the pre-course work in it. This work must be completed prior to attending the course.

RYA Membership

All applicants for RYA instructor qualifications need to be RYA members in order to be eligible to be awarded the instructor qualification. You may either join in advance of the instructor course or at the time your instructor application is submitted to the RYA.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor

 Duration: 2 days 1 night, £360

Course information and content

An RYA Advanced Powerboat Trainer will run practical and theory sessions on all aspects of the Advanced syllabus. Prior to the course you will receive details of a short presentation you will need to deliver during the weekend.

The weekend focuses on the teaching of boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation to safely handle a powerboat in rough conditions and in darkness. The course is very involved and requires a high standard of competence to be successful.

Assessment will be continuous throughout the course. Exercises will be run as an assessment of your knowledge and personal boat handling skill.

Pre-entry Requirements

You must fulfil certain requirements before you can participate on this course;

  • Hold RYA Powerboat Instructor (coastal)
  • Hold the Advanced Powerboat certificate
  • Hold the RYA Advanced Powerboat Exam
  • Hold recognised First Aid certificate (including hypothermia and resuscitation) Click here for a list of all acceptable First Aid certificates
  • Candidates must be at least 16yrs
  • It is also recommended that you have taught a number of PB2 courses before applying to become an advanced instructor
  • Completion of pre-course work*
